Until the 13th century, the inner Rheinwald - today's municipalities of Nufenen and Hinterrhein - served as alpine pasture for farmers from Schams. Around 1280, German-speaking (Walser) colonists from Pomatt settled here at the instigation of the Barons of Sax-Misox and the Barons of Vaz. The village was first mentioned in documents in 1343 as Ovena. The economic basis of the town, which is part of the Three Leagues as a neighborhood of the Rheinwald court and belongs to the Grey League, was agriculture (livestock breeding) and the pass traffic over the San Bernardino. As the former largest village in the valley, it is still considered the political capital today, although the central functions have since been transferred to Splügen. The opening of the Gotthard railway in 1882 hit the Graubünden transport industry hard; Nufenen's population fell by almost two thirds between 1850 and 1990.
