The stone gate bridge was built directly in front of the stone gate of the new town as an old army and trade route. At the end of the 13th century, a wooden bridge (drawbridge) was built, which led over the city moat. The drawbridge was later replaced by a wooden bascule bridge, because for centuries the main shipping route led through the city canal. On one side of the bridge was since 1548 the famous boiler lock, which served until 1920, the shipping traffic. 1926 was the sports lock. In 1996, the lock was rebuilt and was named "Stadtschleuse".
In 1910, the bridge was reinforced and could be used for the double-track electric tram operation. At the same time, a pedestrian bridge was built above the Steintor bridge.
In 1925, a massive arched concrete bridge was built according to the design by Moritz Wolf. In view of increasing traffic, the bridge was 24 meters wide. The stone gate bridge was blown up at the end of the Second World War and restored in 1946 in old construction. In the adjacent canal wall a dolphin figure of the baroque Galatea fountain is embedded.
