The legend of the origin of the name Benneckenstein

Most legends, not only in the Harz Mountains, have a more or less obviously instructive character. Often a striking distinction is made between good and bad in order to trigger or reinforce certain emotions or ways of thinking in the listener.
Only a comparatively small number of sagas deviate from this rather black pedagogy. Some are even downright humorous. These rather rare specimens also include a popular legend that provides information about how the town of Benneckenstein got its name. This legend reports the following:
An old woman was out in the forest with her packed pannier to sell eggs and other farm products in the surrounding settlements. Tired from the heavy load, the old woman sits down on a stone to rest, where she soon fell asleep.
Now it so happened that at the same time a young hunter was chasing the animals in the forest and was also tired from his work. He wanted to take a break and sat down on the sleeping woman, who in her gray clothing he mistook for one of the many stones lying around.
But the supposed stone began to move, the hunter recognized his mistake and apologized. But the old woman, who had been rudely woken up, called out to him indignantly in Low German: "Benn eck en Stein?"
The hunter later related the incident in the nearby village, whereupon the story spread further and soon the place was just called "Benn eck en Stein".

Only a few huts stood in the valley,
many huge spruces in the forest.
There he went, heavy load on his back
once, after the huts once an old woman.

Packed with eggs, cheese and butter,
the acquisition of a sour week,
did she dare the path through the forest,
but she groans at her yoke.

And to strengthen the weary limbs
      and rest the burning soles,
she sat down on a stone
      exhausted to recover there.

The day was gloomy, all around deep peace,
      dense damp fog on earth.
Then the old man's eyelashes fall,
she dreams of a fat flock of geese.

There's a huntsman roaming in the forest,
      a young and happy blood,
he looked at the old woman as a stone and thought
      it's good to rest here.

Not suspecting anything, since nothing is moving,
he sits down on the old woman and sings.
      But these rudely awakened,
drew a frown of displeasure on his forehead.

      The hunter, unsuspecting, was startled
      and stammers an apology.
Indignant, the old woman spoke the word:
      "Benn-eck-en-stein?"

Then it went through the jolly hunter's mind,
      who didn't understand Low German.
He carried his experience to the huts
      and the story was told...

Since then, so the legend goes, that's the name of the place
he lies nestled in the valley so fine
and you examine the hearts of those people there,
      it speaks like this:
      "Benn-eck-en-stein?"
