The valley of the Jeker and the surrounding fertile land of the Haspengouw was an important cultural landscape from an early age. On the Jeker are two very old cities, Tongeren and Maastricht, both of which claim to be the oldest city in their respective states. Tongeren was already a large city in Roman times and the capital of a civitas. Maastricht was still small at the time, but in the early Middle Ages it took the place of Tongeren as an early Christian center and trading place. The Jeker also played an important role later on, within the walled cities as a source of relatively clean water (including for the tannery and the cloth industry) and outside the city walls as an extra defense (as a city moat and as an inundation area; see Jeker Canal and De Kommen, among others). ).[2] In the 19th century, the river, especially in Maastricht, was heavily polluted and a danger to public health, after which parts were covered over. Due to the construction of the Liège-Maastricht Canal (ca. 1850) and the Maasboulevard (ca. 1960), the mouth of the Maas had to be moved twice.[1]
