The Museum Stoomgemaal Halfweg (Steam Pumping Station) is located in a place that was considered extremely risky until about a century and a half ago. Because here was a lake the size of a small inland sea, the Haarlemmermeer, separated only by a narrow dike - the Spaarndammerdijk - from the IJ, an arm of the Zuiderzee - later the IJsselmeer - which in turn had an open access to the North Sea. So the IJ had ebb and flow.

    Haarlemmermeer
The Haarlemmermeer has developed from a series of smaller lakes over the centuries. The largest lake in Holland with an area of around 18,000 hectares was created by peat cutting, storms and strong wave movements. Despite all possible measures, the lake continued to grow until it was literally at the gates of Amsterdam and Haarlem.

In 1839 it was decided to build the Haarlemmermeer according to F.G. to make Baron van Lynden van Hemmen usable again. Recovery would be done with three steam pumping stations.

From 1849 to 1852, the Leeghwater, Cruquius and Lynden pumping stations drained the Haarlemmermeer. At the beginning of July 1852, the Haarlemmermeer had dried up. Eighteen thousand hectares of fertile clay soil became available and "the Haarlemmermeer" was finally "the Haarlemmermeer".

As the drainage of the Haarlemmermeer was a national project, three secondary steam pumping stations were built at state expense. These were Spaarndam (1844), Halfweg (1852) and Gouda (1856). Later the three pumping stations were transferred to the Rijnland Hoogheenraadschap.

In 1865 the reclamation of the IJ began. At the same time, construction of the North Sea Canal began. The reclamation was completed in 1872. The North Sea Canal was opened in 1876. The Spaarndam and Halfweg pumping stations now discharged the water from the reservoir via the side canals C and F into the North Sea Canal.
