The famous Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier is the largest storm surge barrier in the Netherlands. The Delta Works is located between Noord-Beveland and Schouwen-Duiveland. When flooding threatens, the barrier blocks the Eastern Scheldt. Parts of the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier were built on the former Neeltje Jans working island.

For the construction of the dam, artificial islands were needed in the mouth of the Eastern Scheldt. In 1969, Rijkswaterstaat started building the first island.

A Bailey bridge was built between Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland. This temporary bridge connected the islands to the Neeltje Jans working island, where the storm surge barrier was built. The working island was over 200 hectares in size, had its own power plant, a concrete plant, an asphalt plant, working ports and roads. The ir. J.W. Topshuis was built on the northwestern tip.

The barrier was built from 65 prefabricated concrete pillars. Between each of these pillars there were openings with 40-meter-wide sluice gates. All prefabricated elements of the barrier, and thus also the pillars, were built on Neeltje Jans. The pillars were made in an excavation pit 15 meters below sea level. A dike kept the water out of the excavation pit. The construction of a pillar took one and a half years and construction of a new pillar started every two weeks. The construction dock consisted of four parts. When the pillars of one part were finished, that part was flooded. The lifting ship could then enter the dock and lift the pillars one by one from the ground and place them in the barrier.
The Oosterschelde Barrier was opened by Queen Beatrix on October 4, 1986.
