The Lampertheimer Altrhein nature reserve is located west of the city of Lampertheim in the border triangle of Hesse, Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. The cities of Worms and Mannheim are not far away. The nature reserve is picturesquely situated in a former loop of the Rhine. It is over five square meters in size, making it one of the largest nature reserves in Hesse.

A ten-hectare meadow orchard borders on the south side, an Eldorado for bees & Co. A bridge built in 1913 over a dam can be entered and the information board with an overview can be found there. In principle, the Lampertheimer Althrein nature reserve is bordered on all sides by the old Rhine as an island. The nature reserve can be entered all year round and there is no entrance fee.

The Lampertheimer Altrhein nature reserve is the former area where the old Rhine had branched out many times in primeval times, one speaks of meanders. This area was placed under protection as early as 1937. The entire area is now subject to the Habitats Directive for Fauna and Flora (FFH). The European Union has declared the Lampertheimer Altrhein nature reserve a bird sanctuary. Overall, the nature reserve belongs in this category due to the guidelines of the SPA ( Special Protection Area ).

The residents call the nature reserve as a whole the green island of Lampertheim and they just call it Biedensand, although this is actually only a part of the entire nature reserve area. It is divided into larger reed areas, remains of alluvial forest, alluvial meadows and several open water areas. It is a mixed floodplain landscape straight out of a picture book.

One of the bodies of water is the Welsche Loch is a forty-hectare lake in the nature reserve. It is a shallow water lake with interesting flora and fauna. For example, it is a traditional resting place for migratory birds and a wintering place for various species of birds. A colony of cormorants lives permanently at the Welsches Loch. You will be in the company of almost 90 bird species that breed there and well over 200 bird species that have been sighted there. Stands have been set up in the area for visitors. There, for example, reed warblers, rails and many bluethroats can be observed. When the lake silts up, swampy areas are created, which in turn are popular with some mammals.

The lake is threatened with silting up, in the summer of 2003 it was already dry and in the hot summer of 2018 it was certainly no different. When silting up, dry growth spreads immediately - especially through pastures - and accelerates this situation. NABU has been fighting for the preservation of the Welsches Loch for a long time and is hoping for support from the state government of Hesse.

Quiet, secluded area - haven for many species of birds. But there are also squirrels to watch.
