The lower gate Porte de France, along with the other city gates and the remains of the city wall, are evidence of the city fortifications from the 14th century.
It dates from 1315 and leads to Place Turenne, the city's main square.
The majority of trade with “foreigners” passed through this gate. When the evening bells rang, the two gates were closed by the guard and opened again when the morning bell rang.

At Turckheim's former market square, Place Turenne, there are several old houses such as the Bürgerstube (Corps de Garde): this beautiful sandstone building dates back to 1580 and had two functions: a guild house and a warehouse. The bell was used to call citizens to the meeting. Today the tourist information office is located here. In front of the building there is a fountain from the 18th century with a statue of the Virgin Mary.
