The settlement, which is the nucleus of modern Pszczyna, probably began to form during the 11th-12th centuries at the trade route running from Krakow through Oświęcim towards the Moravian Gate and further to Bohemia or to the Danube. It was established on a slight hill between the marshy valleys of the Vistula in the south and Pszczynka in the north, near a ford, which could conveniently cross the second river. It developed right next to a small castle which guarded the ford from at least the 13th century. The location of the settlement along the route running generally from east to west resulted in the shape of a commercial square in the formation, stretching along the east-west axis. After the city was founded, which was to take place in the 13th century, the square began to function as the town square, where weekly markets and annual fairs were held.
The beautiful Old Town of Pszczyna has retained its traditional medieval urban layout. The central square is of course the impressive, extensive Market Square in Pszczyna, surrounded by carefully restored tenement houses from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The historic buildings of the Market Square are the Neo-Renaissance Town Hall, the adjoining magnificent Evangelical Church, the "Warta" building with the Gate of the Chosen leading to the castle and the Catholic Church of All Saints standing slightly behind them. On the opposite side of the square, there is a former wine bar called Frykówka. The market square is also decorated with elements of small architecture and interestingly trimmed plane trees.
