At the end of the 19th century, the Scheldt was straightened at the Kalkense Meersen. The river bend (or meander) was cut off and filled in. By re-excavating the ‘Old Scheldt’, raising the groundwater level, restoring the open water at the Scherenmeersen sub-area and targeted mowing by local farmers, Kalkense Meersen can evolve into a climate buffer. After the old paleomeander – a primeval river from thousands of years ago – withdrew from the landscape, the bed gradually became filled with organic material. This created a meters-thick peat layer, which was mined by local residents as peat: a popular and cheap fuel in times of wood scarcity. The wide ditches and canals in the Scherenmeersen sub-area are remnants of peat extraction from the early 19th century. Today many water birds come here to breed. A great reason to keep your dog on a leash.
