Very large old monastery complex near Glattburg:
The roots of Glattburg go back to Libingen in Toggenburg. In 1754, the local pastor at the time, Josef Helg, founded an "Association of Pious Virgins" for the purpose of Eternal Adoration. The community became viable when the St. Gallen monastery took them on. Prince Abbot Celestin Gugger II gave them the Rule of Saint Benedict in 1760 on the condition that they maintain Eternal Adoration. Structural and financial reasons prompted Prince Abbot Beda Angehrn to move the convent to Glattburg in 1781, which was first mentioned in a document in 788 as a gift to the St. Gallen monastery. Abbot Beda said when he left: "Now we are moving from Neu St. Gallen Libingen to St. Gallenberg Glattburg." Glattburg is the last branch of the monastery of St. Gallen, has been a nunnery since 1978 and was elevated to an abbey in 1984.
