A “Shocking” discovery in the "hole of Alem"
In 2005, the remains of wooden planks protruding just above the water were accidentally observed on the banks of the Meuse near the 'gat van Alem' . A first reconnaissance showed that this was only the "tip" of an almost complete shipwreck.
The purpose of the follow-up reconnaissance was to find out what type of ship it was, what she was used for and possibly how she came to her end. To this end, the shipwreck was accurately measured, the contents of the wreck were examined and a wood sample was taken for dating.
The transom of the wreck was still reasonably intact, while the bow was almost missing. As a result, only the minimum length of 12.8m could be determined, with a maximum width of 4.4m. The ship's wall was covered on the outside with iron plates, between which remains of caulk were found.

The Invaart van Alem is a dead-end Maasarm near Heerewaarden. Only 60 years ago countless professional fishermen were active in this village, where the Maas and Waal are connected by a lock. The large rivers were then still rich in salmon and eel, which were often caught with large sailing ships. These ships were often bought second-hand in fishing towns around the Zuiderzee. These discarded ships were still sufficiently reliable for years of use on the rivers. When those ships could no longer be kept afloat, they were broken up or sunk. One of those ships was found by Mergor in Mosam on an old groyne in the Invaart of Alem, already in a state of disrepair. The wreck immediately raised questions about the ship's history. A beautiful object for serious archaeological research, for which the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands has graciously granted permission.
