The Spekteniederung belongs to an extensive valley area, which extends with a length of around 6 kilometers and a width between 200 and 500 meters from Falkensee in Havelland to Spandau. It begins on the southern edge of the Spandau Forest, “follows” the Berlin city limits and turns south with the Spektelake. The green corridor is part of the Warsaw-Berlin glacial valley and was created during the last Ice Age, the Vistula Ice Age. This area was already used in the Middle Ages, but at that time it was more of a grassland. The damp meadows and flat moors hardly allowed for livestock farming. Like a large vacuum cleaner, the spectacle green parade contributes to the supply of fresh air into the city. The Spekte still existed here until the 1930s as a small river that originated in the wetlands of the Havelland and flowed into the Havel near Spandau. The reclamation of the Havelland in the past centuries as well as lowering of the groundwater due to the commissioning of the Spandau waterworks in 1897 made the river practically disappear.
