Nice little port. A bit further in the direction of Meldorf, the flora and fauna changes and is strongly reminiscent of the Dutch coast. Not far is a NABU house and the Kronenloch nature reserve

The barrage built in 1977 with the original wooden gates could no longer be repaired. So the country decided to install new steel gates with new anchoring and electric drive. The new height of the climate protection dyke was taken into account and correspondingly higher gates were made. The heaviest of the six gates weigh 30 tons and are storm surge-proof.

Children can enjoy watching the boats, exploring the dikes, and observing nature in the Speicherkoog. The presence of a fish sandwich stand during summer also adds to the convenience for families.

Can I bring my dog to the Meldorfer Hafen Sluice Gate and surrounding trails?

The Meldorfer Hafen Sluice Gate area and its surrounding trails are generally dog-friendly. However, as it's a nature reserve, it's crucial to keep dogs on a leash to protect the local wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors. Always remember to clean up after your pet.

What is the historical significance of the Meldorfer Hafen Sluice Gate?

The current Meldorfer Hafen Sluice Gate is a modern storm surge barrier, completed as part of the Speicherkoog development in 1979. This project was crucial for coastal protection and nature conservation, significantly shortening dike lengths and increasing their height. The sluice gate itself, with its new steel gates, replaced an older structure and is vital for controlling water levels and protecting the harbor from North Sea storm surges.

The sluice gate functions as a storm surge barrier, allowing boats to pass while protecting the harbor. It automatically closes when water levels exceed 6.85 meters (PN). For enhanced storm surge protection, the sluice gate remains closed during the winter months, typically from November 15th to April 15th, opening only upon special request. This measure is crucial for safeguarding the region against severe winter storms.
