Großharthau Castle went back to an earlier medieval moated castle. In the first half of the 18th century the palace and manor were rebuilt, incorporating the fabric of the former moated castle. The new baroque complex underwent several changes of ownership, among others the von Flemming, Vitzthum von Eckstädt and von Einsiedel families called the castle their own.
Johann Gottfried Uhlamann from 1764 and Christoph Gottlieb Haußner from 1775 are known as other owners. The gatehouse, which still exists today, was built under the latter in 1794. In the middle of the 19th century, extensive renovations were carried out on the castle. During the Napoleonic Wars, the French general had taken quarters in Großharthau three times in 1813. Prince Friedrich Günther zu Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt acquired the Großharthau manor in 1860. He bequeathed it to his illegitimate son Sizzo von Leutenberg, who was made Prince of Schwarzburg in 1894. Under him, extensive renovations were carried out on the castle again between 1894 and 1902.

After 1945
In 1945 the castle was looted. At the beginning of 1946 there was a fire in the castle, which was then used to extract building materials. The last remains were finally removed in 1948. The parking area has been redesigned and kept less pompous. Previously, the stallions for Moritzburg were housed in the stables of the manor.

Post-turnaround time
The gatehouse and the farm buildings were renovated.

Todays use
The manor buildings and the gatehouse are used for residential purposes.
