In the narrower sense, Vigiljoch describes a 1743 m s.l.m. high transition over the north-eastern foothills of the Zufrittkamm of the Ortler Alps in South Tyrol (Italy). This forms an indentation that is only slightly pronounced in the surrounding range of hills and is the location of the little church of St. Vigil am Joch with frescoes from the 14th century. In a broader sense, the Vigiljoch also refers to the ridge on both sides, mostly wooded and equipped with several flat hills (Larchbichl 1837 m, Bischofskofel 1783 m, Marlinger Joch 1779 m, Rauher Bichl 2018 m), which stretches between the lower Vinschgau , the Burggrafenamt around Meran and the entrance to the Ultental valley, and in a south-westerly direction it only gains significantly in height towards the Naturnser Hochjoch.
