A reformed church has existed in Heiden since 1612. The current church was built by Felix Wilhelm Kubly in 1837-1839 in the classicist style. Like his reformed church in Wattwil, which was built five years later, the building is designed as a transverse church. After a fire, the church was given a new, flat hipped roof in 1936. The interior of the building was also converted into a longitudinal church.
The facades of the nave are divided into two floors by an entablature. The main facade has a four-columned portico flanked by six round-arched windows. The side entrances on the narrow sides are each preceded by a two-columned portico. The upper floor is characterized on all sides by generous semicircular windows with a typical classicist lattice structure.
The 40-meter-high tower has a bell cage and a clock mechanism. From the intermediate floor you can access a surrounding balcony, which is supported by volute consoles. The top is a flat tent roof. The tower can be visited in the summer months.
The interior is strongly influenced by the sweeping organ facade from 1936 and the stained glass window above it. The pulpit is attached laterally to the organ facade. There is a gallery on the tower side.

      First church 1652 - 1838

As was common in Appenzellerland at the time, the first Heidler church was built in 1652 as a simple rectangular building with a squat tower and a Gothic pointed roof.

The church fell victim to the village fire on September 7, 1838, along with most of the houses in the village. At that time, however, the demolition of the aging church building and the construction of a new place of worship were already planned. The Heidler monthly newspaper wrote in 1836: "Anyone who takes even a fleeting look at our gloomy, dilapidated church with its weathered roof will soon be convinced of the urgent need for a new church building." In the same year, 1836, it was decided to demolish the old church and build a new one.

      Second church 1840 - 1936

Work on the new building began on May 8, 1838, a few months before the village fire. By September, the new tower was already largely completed. After the interruption caused by the fire, construction work continued in May 1839 and the new church was consecrated on December 20, 1840.

This second church building is the work of the most important architect in eastern Switzerland at the time, Felix Wilhelm Kubly (1802-1872). He designed the church as a transverse building in which the liturgical center with pulpit, organ, baptismal font and communion table is placed on the wide side of the interior. The pews were arranged in a U-shape around the center. The model for the transverse church building type can be found in the churches of the Huguenots in France.

The new Heidler church was met with widespread approval and praise. In the Swiss Art Guide it is described as a "high point of classicism" and the Appenzell Monthly wrote after its completion that it "marks an epoch in the ecclesiastical architecture of eastern Switzerland and is certainly one of the most beautiful country churches in Switzerland". The tower with its Italian-like elegance was particularly popular then and still is today.

At certain times, the tower with clockwork and bells can be visited. Above you can walk around the tower on the gallery and enjoy the view in all four directions. The view from the tower is breathtaking and worth the CHF 2.00 entry fee.
