    The new water tower in the North Holland town of Den Helder was designed by architect Jan Schotel and was built in 1908. It replaced the old water tower from 1856 and is located in the center of the city, next to the De Vijfsprong roundabout. When it was built it stood on the border between buildings and meadows. The water tower has a height of 40.15 meters and originally had a water reservoir of 400 m³.

    In 1958 a plan was devised to renovate the tower. A plan was made by Architect J.H.J. Kording to give the tower a new water reservoir and a concrete layer on the outside. The tower was renovated from 1959 to 1961. The water reservoir was increased to 500 m³.

    The water tower was decommissioned at the end of the 1980s and sold to the municipality of Den Helder. For several years there was a café on the ground floor of the water tower and above that the studio of LOS Den Helder.[1] In 1991, a second entrance was created on the ground floor of the tower.[2] After the café closed, the inside of the water tower was used as a climbing wall.[3] By 2005, a spiral staircase was attached to the northeast side.[4]

    In 2005, the tower was renovated again, this time the concrete layer was removed and the tower was covered with bricks, so the tower now looks almost the same as when it was built in 1908.[1]

        In 1856 Den Helder was one of the first cities in the Netherlands to have its own water tower and a few meters of water pipes in Huisduinen. After about 50 years the tower was finished and there was interest in a central and larger tower. In 1908 the new water tower was erected in the center of Den Helder. In 1959 the tower was given a gray cement layer over the beautiful bricks in order to be considered modern. But in 2005 the style was taken back from 1908, the cement layer was removed and the tower looked like it did in the beginning.
