The municipality of Viladamat is a small town located on the alluvial plain to the right of the Fluvià, close to the coast. The territory is rugged to the west due to the low elevation hills that form the Serra de Ventalló. This small mountain range separates the Fluvià and Ter valleys.

The highest point of this range is Puig Segalar (179 m above sea level) from where you can see a magnificent view of the Empordà plain and especially of the Gulf of Roses.

The situation on the plain near Empúries, the existing Roman remains in the municipality (Roman villa of the Tolegassos, Roman silo, Roman oven) and the type of urban structure, with rectilinear streets that form right angles, have led us to assume that Viladamat may have a Roman origin.

This urban layout can also be motivated by the fact that the town is at a crossroads of old roads, the one from Empúries to Besalú, the one from Verges to Figueres and the one that goes through Albons to Torroella de Montgrí.
