    One of the major visitor highlights in the Euskirchen district is the "Rheinisches Freilichtmuseum" in Mechernich-Kommern, operated by the Landschaftsverband Rheinland (LVR). Old houses have been transferred here in various regional building groups (e.g. "Eifel/Voreifel-Land", "Bergisches Land", "Westerwald", "Niederrhein"). They have been grouped in such a way that a fictitious village view is created. Some of the houses also have interior furnishings. In some of the buildings, an old craft (e.g. wood turning) can also be observed at certain times.

      The LVR Open Air Museum Kommern and the Rhineland State Museum of Folklore in Kommern, run by the Rhineland Regional Association (LVR), is one of the largest open air museums in Europe with over 100 hectares and around 78 historical buildings from the Prussian Rhine Province.
      The plans for an open air museum in the Rhineland go back to the 1950s. Around 30 cities and municipalities between Aachen, Cologne and the Ruhr area applied for the site, including Duisburg, Krefeld, Rheydt and Kommern, which was still independent at the time (now a district of Mechernich). The choice of Kommern on March 28, 1958 in a runoff election against Krefeld is said to have been due to the then municipal chairman of Kommern, Norbert Leduc. The museum was opened on July 20, 1961.
