The church was consecrated in 1331 as part of a Dominican monastery. Formerly a place of pilgrimage with relics of Thomas Aquinas, scene of the city's first Lutheran service (1529).
The Paulinerkirche became the nucleus of the new university in 1737 and has since been used for university purposes, especially as a university library.

Today the former church houses one of the most beautiful event and exhibition rooms in Lower Saxony.

The Lower Saxony State and University Library is partly housed in the Paulinerkirche.

The church was consecrated in 1331. It was the first Gothic church to belong to a Dominican monastery founded in Göttingen in 1194 and therefore corresponds to the architectural tradition of the mendicant orders. After the Reformation, the first Protestant services in Göttingen were held here. After secularization in the 16th century, a pedagogical school was set up in the former monastery, which quickly became known nationwide. Today, the pedagogy is considered the nucleus of the Georg-August University and its extensive library, which was founded in 1734.

Initially, the church room was also used for university services. But soon there was not enough space for the constantly growing library and the entire church was used to store the books.
