The cross beech is named after four old beech trees that once stood around the square at the crossroads. The oldest of the beeches was about 250 years old when it was felled in 1913 because of white rot. In 1939, a beech that was 200 years old at the time was uprooted by a storm. In 1951, another of the beeches was felled and the current monument was erected. The last cross beech was about 150 years old and about 35 meters high in 1972 when it was felled because of white rot. The tree is marked as a natural monument on older maps. In 2018, a young copper beech grew at its former location.

In addition, in 2005, a large, botanically interesting Süntel beech, about 30 years old, stood directly behind the monument. The tree was probably destroyed during the Father's Day riots in 2006.
