In 1570, the Freesenhuus (the transept) of today's Haneburg was built.
The castle was rebuilt by Count Drosten Joest Hane at the end of the 16th century. It was expanded to include the southern wing, which, like the castle at Gödens, was built in the Renaissance style.
In 1671, the northern wing was expanded and used as a residential castle.
After 1933, the building served as a National Socialist farm school.
At the end of the 1970s, the district took over the castle and restored it to a gem of old architecture through a complete renovation.
Today, the castle is the seat of the adult education center. Viewing only from the outside! Haneburgallee 8

The Haneburg is a two-winged residential castle made of red brick. It was built in 1570 by Claes Frese, the last Drost of Leerort, Leer, Hinte and Uttum as a mansion at the Blink. Subsequently, the manor came into the possession of today's eponymous family Hane.

The origins of today's Haneburg go back to the 16th century, when the last Drost from Leerort, Leer, Hinte and Uttum, Claes Frese, bought lands on the Blinke in Leer and built a mansion there. It was popularly called "van-Frese-Huus". After inheritance disputes with other family members, Jost Hane and Adda Frese became the sole owners of the Fresenhaus. A stone with the inscription "Anno 1616" indicates this event.

The Haneburg The original building, a typical building of the late Renaissance Dutch style, forms the southwest wing of today's Haneburg.
In 1621 the Hane-Frese couple built another house. This forms today's central wing.

It was not until 1935, after the Haneburg underwent various changes of ownership, that the city of Leer, as the current owner, had the northeast wing built. The Haneburg as an entire building is classified as a monument.

In 1973 the district of Leer took over Haneburg from the city of Leer. In the following years until 1976 the Haneburg was extensively renovated.

The Volkshochschule Leer e. V. housed. The lecture halls on the ground floor and the foyer are regularly made available for courses and exhibitions of the adult education center. The usable area of the Haneburg is around 800 square meters. The Haneburg property, including the parking lot at Blinke, is approx. 12,500 square meters.
