The armored tank Deuringen was the military training area in the western forests of Augsburg. Easily accessible from the former Sheridan barracks, everyday life was completely different here during the US presence than in the densely populated barracks suburbs of the city.

Today it is the diversity of the landscape that one walks through on the way to the "Panzerkessel". Dense mixed forest, coniferous and deciduous forests punctuated by cleared areas with bush and shrub growth, the path to the Deuringer Heide leads so diverse and varied. The heathland, which partly resembles a raised bog and on the other hand has a steppe-like character, was created by the compaction of the soil, by driving on with tanks and other heavy equipment. The heavy tracked vehicles created depressions and hollows, some of which are now filled with water. The landscape created in this way today offers a new home to many rare plants and animals.
The fauna are among others. Reptiles, amphibians, birds and insects, but also mammals feel at home here. In 2009, the Deuringer Heide nature trail was established by the Augsburg-Westliche Wälder Nature Park and provides visitors with information about flora and fauna.
Mountain bikers, walkers, athletes and nature lovers will all get their money's worth. The nature park is also ideal as a destination for families with children. 10 stations on the nature trail invite you to deal with nature.
