The first town hall was built between 1599 and 1601.
In 1693 the town hall burned down to the stone Renaissance substructure.
From 1716 it was rebuilt on the old foundations as a half-timbered building by the Württemberg architect Johann Ulrich Heim.

The Historic Town Hall is a true gem. Built between 1599 and 1601, it was destroyed in a 1693 fire, except for its Renaissance stone foundation. Rebuilt as a half-timbered building in 1716/1717, it is the official residence of the Lord Mayor. In 1981, the fountain was erected in front of the town hall to commemorate the "Backnang Goose War" of 1606 to 1612. The sculpture "The Claque" stands in front of the town hall. It was created in 1987 to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the city of Backnang. As reported in the 2012 Stuttgarter Zeitung, the sculpture was dismantled during the street festival. When it was due to be rebuilt, it had disappeared. Later, one of the three figures was offered for sale to a scrap metal dealer, who informed the police. The other two are still missing. The Korb artist, Guido Messer, has worked on all three figures in such a way that no one can guess which gentleman is 25 years old and which ones are fresh from the foundry.
