The Schwellenburg, which is actually just a hill in the landscape, is located northwest of Erfurt directly on the B4. On the hill, which bears the name "Schwellenburg", however, has never stood a castle or other fortifications. The striking hill consists mainly of cold stone and gypsum, which was mined there from 1865 for a lime kiln. However, various finds pointed to the existence of a Stone Age hilltop settlement.
Erfurt was a well-known wine town in the Middle Ages. In Tiefthal, in the immediate vicinity of Schwellenburg, vineyards were already mentioned in documents in 1074.
So you could find on the Schwellenburg undoubtedly remnants that occupy an old wine history. Through the mining of rocks and vineyards, in the past centuries, the characteristic thresholds have emerged.
The Schwellenburg has been a nature reserve since 1939.
