    Wesselburen was built on two ridges in the marshland that had been inhabited for over 1000 years and over time grew into a larger settlement. According to archaeological finds, the central village wall dates back to the 8th to 9th centuries and was continually increased. The place was first mentioned in a document on May 7, 1281, when the people of Hamburg and Dithmarscher signed a non-aggression pact in Mehldorf. Even then, the town had the structure it has today: starting from the highest point on which the church is located, the main streets radiate out from the historic town center.

    After Wesselburen had lost the independence of the Dithmarschen Farmers' Republic in 1559, the town flourished.

The crack of the church comes from the builder Johann Georg Schott from Heide, who was born and grew up in southern Germany (Vaihingen an der Enz).
