This Waal (irrigation canal) is probably as old as the Kurzhof in Kurzras, which was first mentioned in documents around 1300. The Waal led the water to the potato field on the "Hintere Wies", where it was drained via a branched system onto the dry areas using the "water plate". Every spring, farmhands took part in the Waal with the "Waalhau" - their own device, with a cutting edge at the front and at the back
Shovel suitable for water. A time-consuming job! The "Lower Mountain Waal" was operated for almost 700 years and was only abandoned around 1970. Alois Tumler, a young farmer at the Wieshof, created a project to renovate the Waal and the path in 2019 as a student at the "Fürstenburg" agricultural high school in Burgeis. In 2020 and 2021, under the supervision of the Naturns forestry station, accompanied by Mayor Karl Josef Rainer and the
Schnalstal Tourism Association, the project was implemented. The work was financed by Schnalstaler Gletscherbahnen AG under the president Dr. Michl Ebner.
