The building is made of red brick with natural stone decorations and the architectural style was influenced by the Dutch Renaissance. The pediment shows the coat of arms between two lions. Among them are fourteen coats of arms of cities, including Berlin, St. Petersburg and Paris, which were then reached by rail.
Amsterdam Centraal was built on three artificial islands and stands because of the sandy, damp ground on about 9000 wooden posts. On October 15, 1889, the station was opened, replacing the stations "Willemspoort" and "Station Westerdok".
