The impressive Benedictine monastery was built in 1083 for a canonical community and handed over to the Benedictines eleven years later. By the middle of the 18th century, the magnificent building was made what today proudly towers at 422 meters above the Danube. The monastery has also been a World Heritage Site since 2000.

There is a museum in the imperial wing of the abbey. After the tour, you can dine in the abbey restaurant.

ora, lege et labora / Göttweig Benedictine Abbey at 422 m above sea level
Spiritual center in the heart of Lower Austria since 1083
The Göttweig Benedictine Abbey stands at 422 m above sea level on the eastern edge of the world-famous Wachau Danube Valley and is unmissable. A World Heritage Site since 2000, it is not only a magnet for guests from all over the world, but also a spiritual center in the heart of Lower Austria, supported by a community of 34 monks.
The monastery - also called the "Austrian Montecassino" due to its magnificent mountain location - was founded in 1083 as a monastery for a community of canons who lived according to the Rule of Augustine. In 1094, Göttweig was handed over to the Benedictines.
Today, only remnants of Göttweig's medieval buildings remain (Erentrudis Chapel from 1072, Old Castle, crypt and choir of the church), as the baroque new building of the monastery became necessary after a devastating fire in 1718.
The imperial court architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt provided the plans for the grandiose monastery building, which was started in 1720 under Abbot Gottfried Bessel and was two-thirds completed.

The Benedictine monastery of Göttweig towers unmistakably at 422 m above sea level on the eastern edge of the world-famous Danube valley of the Wachau. A World Heritage Site since 2000, it is not only a magnet for guests from all over the world, but also a spiritual center in the heart of Lower Austria, supported by a community of 41 monks. In the museum in the imperial tract, the visitor experiences this baroque splendor, e.g. B. the monumental Kaiserstiege with the ceiling fresco by Paul Troger from 1739, which is one of the most beautiful and largest baroque staircases in Europe. In the adjoining princely and imperial rooms, the art collections of the monastery show annual special exhibitions.
