    At the end of the Lindenring is the Salztor [11]. The old city gate at this point was demolished in 1824. Two classicist gatehouses were built in its place between 1834 and 1835.

        The Salztor is a city gate to the old town of Naumburg (Saale) in Saxony-Anhalt. The gatehouses are now used as a library and event rooms.
        The original, late medieval Salztor was the most heavily fortified city gate of the five gates of Naumburg's city fortifications. A stone bridge built in 1545 from stones from the demolished Georgenkloster led to the gate, which was secured by two towers. The old Salztor was then demolished in 1834.
        The gatehouses that still exist today, built in the classicist style, were built in 1834/35 as a replacement. The houses, built according to designs by Friedrich Erdmann Heinrich Schmid, other sources name the Naumburg architect Schröder, by the master mason Johann Heinrich Elschner the Elder and Heinrich Crato, flank the access road and, like the previous building, initially served as a customs station and then, from 1874, as a guard and detention center. Later, until 1992, the western building housed a classroom for the neighboring Salztorschule. The east building was used as an outbuilding by the puppet theater. The roof and facade were renovated in 1914. In the following years, however, maintenance work was neglected, so that extensive renovation was necessary from 1992 onwards. First the eastern gatehouse was renovated, then the western gatehouse in 1993/94.
        The east gatehouse now houses the Bibliotheca Lepsius library of the former Naumburg mayor Carl Peter Lepsius. The western building is used as an event room and exhibition space for the theater.
