One of the few saints who is highly valued outside of Christianity is San Francesco, known in German-speaking countries as Francis of Assisi. Francis was born in Assisi in 1181/82 and died in 1226. In his youth, the son of wealthy parents, he was more of a bon vivant, but later he turned to Christ. One day he was praying in the half-ruined church of San Damiano, located on a hillside outside the city walls of Assisi, and heard the voice of Christ from the cross, calling on him to "rebuild his church". At first he took this request literally and restored the church building, but later he came to the realization that this was primarily about the church as the community of believers.
Many people joined him, and the Order of the Friars Minor of Francis of Assisi was founded. Today there are three male branches in the large Franciscan order family: the Franciscans, the Minorites and the Capuchins; and two female ones: the Franciscan sisters and the Poor Clares.
His burial church in Assisi, the Basilica of San Francesco, which did not even exist during Francis's lifetime, is nevertheless one of the great "original shrines" of the Franciscan order. It can be found here as a hiking highlight under this link: komoot.de/highlight/138624

The construction of our Bolzano monastery was started in 1599 by Baron Engelhard Dietrich von Wolkenstein. The church was consecrated in 1603. The monastery was enlarged in 1673 and the church in 1678.

On October 4, 1810, the Italian government closed the monastery. The noble lady Katharina von Hepperger bought the monastery back in 1816 and gave it to the Capuchins for perpetual use (“Hepperger clause”). The monastery was badly damaged in the Second World War, but was rebuilt in 1946/47. The last major reconstruction of the monastery and church renovation took place in 1993/94.

Today, two thirds of the monastery building and garden are rented to the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. They house the State Vocational School for Social Professions. The last renovation of the monastery took place in 1993/94 when this school was set up. The monastery garden has been transformed by the municipality of Bolzano into a "Capuchin Park" for the population. In 2015, some of the monastery's rooms were also rented to the "Vincent Community of South Tyrol" for the central office and for social services.

The Capuchin Church in Bolzano is dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua. It is located together with the Capuchin monastery at Wolkensteinstrasse 1 in the city center - Bozen-Rentsch.
The simple, single-nave monastery church on the corner of Wolkensteinstrasse and Kapuzinergasse has a vestibule with a straight choir end. The high altar was created by the Veronese painter Felice Brusasorci and depicts Saints Anthony of Padua and Francis of Assisi. In a side chapel there is an altar with the image of the Assumption of Mary. The monastery building contains remains of frescoes from the previous building from the 14th and 15th centuries. The monastery, church and garden have been listed as historical monuments since 1977.
