The building was built according to the time in classicist style. To the side of the central building (riding hall) extend two long wings, which each bend twice at right angles and thus form an almost closed courtyard. The building complex includes the riding hall (now the entrance hall of the museum), the horse stable and a wing for the accommodation of wagons and riding harness. The other building wing housed the quarters of the staff of the Marstall.

After the ducal residence was relocated from Ludwigslust to Schwerin after more than 70 years in 1837, the construction of larger government buildings was necessary. Thus, the old stables at the Old Garden were considered too small. The Marstall was built to plans by Georg Adolf Demmler in the years 1838-1842 on the former Wadewiesen. The name of the meadows derives from the use of the drying of fishing nets (calves). Also, there was previously the woodyard of the castle. The construction was based on the Ludwigsluster Marstall by Johann Georg Barca. Construction management for the Schwerin Marstall was handled by building engineer Carl Behnke.

Since 1990, the building is the seat of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The Marstall was extensively renovated in the years 2003 to 2007. Since 2009, there is also the seat of the Ministry of Labor, Equality and Social Affairs of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
