The Kellinghusen special ammunition storage (SAS) was a depot for tactical nuclear weapons of the armed forces of the United States. The beautiful forest area is now freely accessible and only serves as a local recreation area, the former storage areas are also open and served as a beautiful graffiti base. Interesting to look at and a nice stopover when there is a shower.

Looking back today, it's simply unbelievable that US nuclear weapons were once stored here, in the middle of Germany, in Schleswig-Holstein.

The site and the bunkers are currently freely accessible and can be visited.

Very impressive, but also very depressing – even if you're there in broad daylight
      and sunshine.

As part of nuclear sharing, American nuclear battlefield weapons were to be deployed by German delivery systems. Artillery shells for 203mm and 155mm howitzers (W-33 and W-79, respectively W-48) were stored there.

The units for which the nuclear weapons were intended were the divisional artillery of the 6th Panzergrenadier Division (Field Artillery Battalion 61 and Rocket Artillery Battalion 62 in Kellinghusen) and the brigade artillery units (Armored Artillery Battalion 165 in Wentorf, Armored Artillery Battalion 177, Hamburg-Rahlstedt, and Armored Artillery Battalion 185 in Boostedt).

The American units guarding the "inner ring" were the 13th U.S. Army Field Artillery Detachment (USAFAD) (1961–1992), the 552nd U.S. Army Artillery Group (until 1966), and the 294th U.S. Army Artillery Group (from June 1966).
The "outer ring" was secured by the 6th Escort Battery (which also had security duties in the inner area), which, with 300 men, was almost a battalion in strength. It was established in November 1960 and relocated from Boostedt to Kellinghusen in 1964 when the Liliencron Barracks were expanded.

The US soldiers withdrew at the end of 1991. Since the camp was abandoned, the site has served as a recreational area and is freely accessible.

The remaining buildings have been gutted, are open, and are also accessible.

However, some of them have been heavily damaged by vandalism.

An intact tunnel system connects individual buildings and positions.
