In the middle of the 17th century, Elector Johann Georg III had a pleasure garden laid out outside the city gates. Prince Johann Georg Chevallier de Saxe - a son of August the Strong, acquired it in 1764. Under court architect Friedrich August Krubsacius, a palace in the Rococo style and an elaborately designed baroque park were built.

After the prince's death, Electress Maria Antonia Walpurgis had the park expanded. Small architectural features, such as a pavilion and a hermitage, were added. At the same time, she established a foundation to ensure that the area was permanently available as a residence for the second-born son of the Saxon ruling house (second-genital inheritance).

As one of the first gardens in the region, the park was landscaped after 1783. Another comprehensive redesign in this style took place in 1904 under head garden director Johann Carl Friedrich Bouché. The baroque parterre and main axes with a framing system of avenues were integrated.

The German Hygiene Museum has been located in the Blüherpark since 1930. This led to a significant impairment of the basic structure of the park.

The destruction of the park during the Second World War was considerable. After the remains of the palace were demolished, a medicinal herb garden was created in the central parterre area. In the following years, the garden was fundamentally redesigned as a public park, the path system was simplified and playgrounds were built.
