    The church is actually called the Church of St. John of Kronstadt.

    During the Gründerzeit, northern St. Pauli (Karoviertel and Schanzenviertel) became more and more densely populated. The Evangelical Lutheran congregation of St. Pauli Church, which had been located on the edge of the harbor since 1683, first decided to establish two pastorates (1895 and 1901/02) in order to be able to better serve this area, and finally to found a branch church . The cornerstone of the Church of Grace was laid on July 8, 1906, and the inauguration took place on December 1, 1907.

    The building was severely damaged in World War II and only reopened in 1947. Since then, the community of “St. Pauli North” independently. In 1972, the expansion of the fair resulted in the congregation losing both pastorates.

    Since the significant renovation costs of the Church of Grace exceeded the financial strength of the community, new uses were considered. In order to preserve the building as a place of worship, it was given to the congregation of St. John of Kronstadt of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate in 2004. This was a sign of ecumenical brotherhood. The altar of the Church of Grace, made of sandstone, is now in the St. Pauli Church.
