    DBU Naturerbe GmbH has been the owner of the Günthersleben area since 2016. The DBU natural heritage area is 151 hectares in size and is located on the southern slope of the Seeberg, which consists of shell limestone and keuper, in the south-western Thuringian basin.
    History:
    Limestone, dolomite and gypsum were mined on the area until the beginning of the 20th century. In 1935 it was used by the military as a training site; initially by the Wehrmacht and from 1974 to 1990 by the National People's Army. Between 1945 and 1974, the area was farmed. From 1991 the area was used by the armed forces for shooting and driver training, before it was returned to the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks in 2014.

    Area description and development goals
    The DBU natural heritage area Günthersleben is a dry hillside area. Open land areas take up the largest part. The open landscapes are optimized and preserved as a habitat for rare animal and plant species that specialize in these habitats. There are smaller forest areas in the northwest. Ash, field and norway maple, whitebeam and wild fruit trees grow there. In the western part and southern edge, small-scale conifer stands with Scots pine, black pine and Douglas fir are interspersed in the open land. The near-natural deciduous trees are left to their natural development, the coniferous forests, on the other hand, are gradually being converted into near-natural field trees and forests. Valuable habitats with high biodiversity are also the transition areas between forest and open land. These are promoted as protection and breeding space through appropriate forest edge design.
