Written sources mention Esen as early as 961 as the mother parish of Diksmuide and Klerken, among others. St. Peter's Church later became a 12th century Romanesque church. Remnants of field and ironstone are visible in the aisle. The western tower was built in 1524, modified at the beginning of the 18th century and redecorated in a neo-Gothic style around 1908. During WWII I the church was severely damaged. After 1918 it was rebuilt and restored. The interior includes colorful paintings of the
Esense artist Gaston Theuninck and a beautiful organ.

The oldest mention of a church would be from 961, in which there is mention of ecclesia de Esna cum capellis suis Diccamutha et Clarc, whereby Diksmuide and Klerken would therefore be auxiliary chapels of the parish of Esen. The church was also mentioned in 1066. At the end of the 12th century, the original - possibly made of clay - was replaced by a Romanesque church building in ironstone and fieldstone. Excavations in 1969 found the foundations of a straight chord closure.

In 1488 the church was set on fire by troops of Emperor Maximilian I. In the first half of the 16th century the church was restored to a Gothic hall church. A west tower was added about 1524. About 1551 the transept and aisles were completed. Around 1578 the church was again destroyed during the religious disputes. The church was restored in the early 17th century.

On October 20, 1914, the church was set on fire by the Germans, and the archive and art treasures were also lost. On May 20, 1917, the church was shelled by Belgian artillery. Under the leadership of Thierry Nolf, the rebuilding of the church was started and this church was consecrated in 1926. The western arm of the transept is made of ironstone and is a reconstruction of the Romanesque part of the original church.
