"The yellow wild daffodil usually blooms between the beginning of April and the beginning of May. For decades, the meadows on the wet meadows were used for hay production. To fertilize the meadows annually, the farmers dug so-called riparian ditches parallel to the slope and irrigated the areas with stream water containing suspended matter. This is how flower-rich wet and marshy meadows flourished with bearberry and yellow daffodils. With the use of artificial fertilizers after the Second World War, the cultivation of the meadows was no longer worthwhile. The stream valleys were reforested with spruce trees or used intensively as grassland. The dark spruce forests left the yellow wild daffodil no habitat. In 1978, a nature reserve was designated to protect the stream valleys in the Holzwarche area. In the 1980s, nature conservation efforts were made to give the daffodil its habitat back through renaturation. From early to mid-April, wild daffodils bloom in the Holzwarche Valley. They're beautiful to look at and not quite as crowded as the daffodil meadows in the Oleftal Valley.

Beautiful valley with thousands of wild daffodils. If you are lucky these will all be in bloom. Easily accessible from the parking lot at the Enkelberger Muhle.
Only room for a few cars.

Daffodils prefer the damp, nutrient-poor valley meadows along small streams such as the Holzwarche and its tributaries. These areas were traditionally mowed late in the season, allowing the plants to grow, flower, and disperse their seeds undisturbed. This traditional meadow management has fostered a unique ecosystem over centuries, which is now a protected nature reserve.
