The Hornbeker Mühlenbach crosses the path here before flowing a little further into the Elbe-Lübeck Canal. The small wooden bridge fulfills its purpose and leads over dry feet. A memorial stone reminds that the Limes Saxoniae also ran here.
The settlement area of the ethnic groups has been marked by borders since the early 9th century at the latest. In the north it was the Danewerk. It separated the area of the Danes from that of the Saxons. The eastern border between the area of influence of the Saxons and the Slavic areas of Wagria and Polabia, which have been populated by Abodrites since the 7th century, was the so-called "Limes Saxoniae". It was created after the advance of the Franks into the Saxon area from 810 to protect against the Slavs. It followed the natural conditions such as rivers and swampy lowlands and was partly secured by castles.
According to a chronicle that was written around 1070 by the historian Adam von Bremen, the course can be assumed. The border line then started at Boizenburg on the Elbe in the south, followed by the Delvenau, then the Trave and finally the Schwentine, which flows into the Kiel Fjord.

The Hornbeker Mühlenbach is an approx. 7 km long stream that runs near Niendorf a. d. St. rises and flows into the Elbe-Lübeck Canal near Hornbek through a deeply cut Kerbtal (before 1900 in the Delvenau). The old salt road crossed it here on the Mühlendamm. It was of particular importance because it had been part of the Limes Saxoniae since 810 and thus formed the border between the Saxons and the Abodrites (Slavs).

⚠️ Attention: today when driving on the bridge it was found that some planks are rotten at one end and 1-2 have already broken off completely, so there is a hole here! Drive carefully and test stability if necessary! ⚠️
