The grater mill was first mentioned in 1282 as a wind mill. It remained in the possession of Weingarten Monastery for around 500 years. It has been called a grater mill since 1653. The first detailed description is from the year 1531. The current building dates from the year 1711. In 1939 the flour mill operation was given up. However, both the furnishings and fittings of the mill have been completely preserved. These include four grinding mills, two roller mills, the older of which was built in 1837, a black dust cylinder and a semolina cleaning machine, etc. The mill is driven by an overshot water wheel, which receives its water supply from a canal from the Rohnebach.

In 1981/82 the grater mill was renovated on the initiative of the Ravensburg district, which was also financially involved here. The municipality of Amtzell acquired the mill in 2000. As a museum mill, it now offers a comprehensive insight into the world of grain milling before the Second World War with its complete equipment and the overshot water wheel. With a lot of commitment, love and financial support from the Monument Foundation, the Monument Office and the compensating stock, the former residential wing was also renovated.
