For centuries, the field sworn officers in Franconia were elected and sworn men who were tasked with protecting the law and property in a “land divided by many borders”. Since the college of field sworn officers often consisted of seven people, the term “Seven” was also developed. It can be proven that the Seven were responsible for setting and monitoring the boundary stones up until the 13th century. Originally a result of Germanic jurisdiction, the Seven Office is today the oldest honorary office known in Bavaria. The Seven placed special documents in the ground in addition to the boundary stone to secure evidence (Secret of the Seven!). This tried and tested tradition has not changed even in times of modern electronic and satellite-based surveying technology.
