At the end of the 18th century, the Royal Zeeland Society of Sciences founded the Medioburgense Museum in Middelburg. In 1886 the art museum was founded in the same city. During the 20th century, the museums fell into disrepair and part of the collection was lost in the 1940 bombing. In 1961 the Zeeland Museum Foundation set up shop in the Museum Medioburgense building on Wagenaarstraat. The museum receives part of the collection of the Zeeuws Genootschap on loan and the collection of the art museum is transferred to the museum foundation.
