The Cloudbursts – Wet Cloudburst and Dry Cloudburst are two collapse funnels caused by sinkholes. A legend has an explanation for the origin of the strange funnels: “Trendula, one of the three Reinhardswald giants and who gave the town of Trendelburg its name, was full of resentment towards her sisters Saba and Brama. On a stormy night, the two were returning to their own castles from a visit to their father, the giant Kruko, when the hateful Trendula ambushed them and Brama assassinated from behind. Cloudbursts and heavy thunderstorms had been falling in the area of the murder site for days and the just punishment was not long in coming: lightning struck the murderess and the ground opened up with thunder and swallowed Trendula.”

In the fairy tale, Rapunzel's father keeps stealing the Rapunzel salad for his pregnant wife from a sorceress in the neighboring garden. After the birth, the sorceress takes the child and as soon as the girl turns 12, she locks her in a doorless dream to seal her off from the outside world. The Trendelburg was built around 1300. It was named after the village of Trende, which was not located where it is today. The village, which was already quite large at the time, was abandoned in order to move under the protection of the castle, so that today's Trendelburg was founded. The possession was fought over for a long time, because the diocese of Paderborn also raised claims to the land. It was not until 1597 that the area actually became the property of the County of Hesse.

The castle was destroyed several times, most recently in the 30-year war and then in the 7-year war. It was not fundamentally rebuilt until 1901, when it was used privately for 4 generations. The last owner of this von Stockhausen family then converted the castle into a hotel, which it still is today.

In addition to the real story, the Trendelburg is said to have been the visual template for the Rapunzel Tower from the Grimm fairy tale. It is not for nothing that Rapunzel's long, golden hair hangs down on the Rapunzel Tower.

Today there is a 4-star hotel and a restaurant. From the castle terrace you can enjoy a wonderful view, but the interior of the restaurant is also very nicely furnished. The food is quite expensive. The main courses are around €25-35. Coffee and cakes are also quite expensive (cake + pot of coffee = 12 €).

The keep of the Trendelburg can be visited and climbed. Here, too, you have to pay a rather expensive entrance fee of €4.50.
