    Minnemeersbrug and surroundings
This area was an “upstal”, an undeveloped piece of land along the water, ceded to the people of Ghent in 1213 by Count Ferrand of Portugal. Provided that certain rules were observed, anyone was allowed to use these lakes. Which would explain “Minnemeers” as “Gemeenenmeersch”.
Minne is literally derived from the Germanic mannja (water spirit), a derivative of man, which was distorted under the influence of minnen (Dutch minne, now meermin).

Due to its location on the water, this area was already highly industrialized in the early 19th century. The current bridge is located slightly further south than the original Minnemeersbrug.
In 1908, the demolition of the Groenbrug or Oude Minnemeersbrug that connected the Groenbrugstraat with the Minnemeers began.

The Minnemeersbrug is a stone arch bridge over the Leie in the city of Ghent. The bridge consists of one span over the Leie. At the four corners of the bridge are stone pillars, on which lanterns are mounted. The bridge is owned by the city of Ghent and was built under the mayoralty of Emile Braun.

Next to the Minnemeers Bridge is the building of the former cotton mill Desmet-Guéquier, which has housed the MIAT, the museum about industry, labor and textiles, since 1991.

The Minnemeers Bridge was mentioned as early as 1338. However, this bridge was located 100 m upstream, at the current Groenbrugstraat.

The name of the bridge is derived from the Minnemeers (also the name of a street and of a concert hall in the neighbourhood), where minne is a corruption of the word mean. The Minnemeers is therefore a shared lake belonging to the entire population.

The bridge is also referred to as the Kongo Bridge - especially by the people of Ghent - because it is an extension of the Kongostraat.

As @Katrien already wrote, the "Minne" part of the name refers to "gemene", in the sense of "common/shared" meers (wet ground, see relationship with the term 'marsh').
However, the name of the bridge was translated at the time as 'Pont du Pré d'Amour", as is chiseled into a stone halfway along the bridge. "Pont du Pré Commun" would actually have been more correct.
