The Elbe-Lübeck Canal dominates the landscape around Kühsen. Since 1900, it has connected the Elbe and Trave rivers, flowing peacefully through fields and meadows. Today, it is primarily used by pleasure boats. A well-developed hiking trail runs directly along the shore, ideal for longer walks—whether toward Lauenburg or Lübeck. The tranquil setting and waterfront views make the canal a popular spot for excursions and outdoor breaks.

The village of Kühsen was first documented in 1230. However, the Stone Age settlements discovered in Kühsen's territory prove that the place was inhabited long before that. One of the most noteworthy events of the post-war period was certainly the discovery of a bog body during drainage work in the immediate vicinity of the village in the 1960s.
Bends, elevations, and curves give the village character and beauty. The coat of arms depicts characteristic features of the community, such as the seven farmhouses arranged in a circle on the Brink and the Elbe-Lübeck Canal.
The village community center has been the center of the village since 1995. In addition to sufficient space for the fire department and the kindergarten, it offers a large common room for various activities for residents.
The Kühsen Lake, the Karpfenkuhle, serves as a swimming area in the summer and an ice skating rink in the cold winters. The Elbe-Lübeck Canal was built in 1900 to create a navigable connection between the Elbe River near Lauenburg and the Trave River near Lübeck. Today, it is used almost exclusively by pleasure boats. In the area of the small community of Kühsen, it flows through a landscape dominated by fields and meadows. A very beautiful hiking trail runs along the canal bank. Those who wish can walk along the canal for several kilometers between Lauenburg and Lübeck.

The Elbe-Lübeck Canal (ELK, 1900–1936: Elbe-Trave Canal) is a 61.55 km long Class III federal waterway from Lauenburg/Elbe at Elbe km 569.23 to Lübeck in the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. It provides a link for inland navigation between the Elbe and the Baltic Sea.
The foundation stone of the canal, which the citizens of Lübeck viewed as a competitor to the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal, was ceremoniously laid on May 31, 1895. Mayor Heinrich Klug opened it in Lübeck on June 16, 1900, in the presence of the Kaiser. The Stecknitz and Delvenau rivers are largely merged into the Elbe-Lübeck Canal. The inland waterway, known until 1936 as the Elbe-Trave Canal, shortened the distance to 62 kilometers, reduced the number of locks to seven, and reduced the travel time to approximately eight hours. A technology that was highly advanced for its time and has proven itself to this day, with purely hydrodynamic (only water power) locks and generously dimensioned bridges designed by construction inspector Ludwig Hotopp, made the canal seem exemplary for a long time.

The canal's current significance is rather limited, as the lock and bridge dimensions, which are small by today's standards, do not allow for economical container transport, and only smaller inland vessels with a load capacity of up to 1,000 tons can pass through the canal. The canal is also used by recreational boaters between the Baltic Sea and the Elbe River (approximately 5,000–6,000 boats per year).
