Opera Antwerp in 10 facts:

1) Operas have been performed in Antwerp since 1660, first in the Spanish Pant on the Grote Markt and later in the Tapissierspand, where the Bourla Theater would later be built.
2) In 1834 the Bourla Theater opens as Théâtre Royal. Only French repertoire is performed. Some sinjors still speak of the 'French opera' today when they talk about the Bourla Theatre.
3) Under the impulse of composer Peter Benoit, among others, Antwerp decides in 1899 to set up a Flemish Opera as a counterpart to the Bourla Theatre.
4) One of the ideas was to build an opera in the Stadspark, but that met with a lot of protest. It was feared that the park would lose its character.
5) In the end, the Kunstlei (the current Francelei) was chosen on the spot where the covered Hallen and Markets (the Criée) used to be. They had moved to Van Wesenbekestraat. Construction started in 1904 and lasted three years.
6) On October 18, 1907, the Flemish Opera in Antwerp was festively opened. The neo-Baroque building decorated in Louis XVI style was immediately loved by the public.
7) All the public, rich and less rich, entered the hall, a very democratic idea for the time. Those who had money walked straight ahead up the stately stairs to the ground floor or the first balcony. Those who sat on the higher, cheaper balconies had to take a separate staircase.
8) Today the hall has 1081 seats. The ceiling painting represents Rythmus and shows a male figure surrounded by nine female muses.
9) At the opening, the opera was technically very modern as it made full use of the new electric light. The opening of the stage measures 11.90 meters in width. The stage tower is 23 meters high.
10) In 2004 the opera closed for the first time for a major renovation, which would last three years. The technology was modernized, the stage was given a side stage and a new building was built for offices and workspaces.
