Die 1903 gegründete SpVgg Fürth, damals noch Abteilung des TV Fürth 1860, musste ihr Training und ihre Spiele zunächst auf dem städtischen Jedermannsportplatz auf dem Schießanger durchführen. Dort mussten die Tore und Begrenzungsstangen zu jedem Spiel extra aufgebaut werden. 1906 untersagte der Magistrat von Fürth jedoch das Fußballspielen am Schießanger. Vorübergehend spielte man auf einem von SpVgg-Vorstand Zolles zur Verfügung gestellten Acker an der Flößaustraße. Dies gestaltete sich jedoch als kaum durchführbar. So beschloss man noch im gleichen Jahr, sich selbständig zu machen und eine eigene Sportstätte zu bauen. Man fand ein Grundstück an der Vacher Straße im Wiesengrund und legte einen Platz an, der mit einem Bretterzaun umgeben und mit einer Tribüne ausgestattet wurde. In den folgenden Jahren schlossen sich immer mehr andere Sportarten dem Verein an und benötigten Platz für eigene Spielstätten. Außerdem wuchs die Zuschaueranzahl bei den Spielen der Fußballer schnell stark an. Man erkannte, dass der aktuelle Standort nur eine Zwischenlösung sein konnte und gründete 1908 einen Platzfonds, um Geld für ein neues Gelände zu sammeln. Viele Privatpersonen, aber auch etliche Firmen beteiligten sich an dem Fonds. Am 19. Januar 1910 wurde in einer Mitgliederversammlung die Suche nach einem geeigneten Grundstück beschlossen. Nachdem eine Platzkommission der SpVgg Fürth, bestehend aus dem Vorsitzenden und Fürther Baurat Heinz Ludwig Kraus, dem Kassier und Mühlenbesitzer Michael Wolfsgruber und dem Gründungsmitglied Bernhard Winkler, Areale auf der Hardhöhe und an der Siebenbogenbrücke verworfen hatte und auch ein Platz an der Bahnlinie hinter dem Ranningers Garten bei Unterfarrnbach nicht geeignet erschien, blieben noch zwei Alternativen in der Gemeinde Ronhof. Zuletzt hatte man dort ein bestimmtes Grundstück ins Auge gefasst und schließlich stimmte die Mitgliederversammlung mit dem eindeutigem Votum von 100:1 dem Vorschlag zu [1]. Am 18. Februar 1910 veranlasst dann der Vereinsvorstand Kraus den Kauf eines 10 1/2 Tagwerk großen Areals zum Preis von 24.000 Mark. Der größere Teil gehörte den "Gebrüdern Lebender", ein kleiner Teil einem "Ökonomen Brandstätter".[2] Die Adresse war damals noch "Erlanger Straße gegenüber dem Zentralfriedhof", denn der heutige Laubenweg existierte damals noch nicht. Zwischen dem Friedhof und dem Sportgelände befand sich noch ein Wäldchen, so dass man nur auf einem Feld- bzw. Waldweg dorthin gelangen konnte. Dieser könnte sich dort befunden haben, wo sich seit 2019 der William-Townley-Weg erstreckt, das ist aber unsicher. Schon Mitte März machte man sich an die Arbeiten für das neue Vereinsgelände.
