Parish Church of St. Nicholas, Stein an der Donau
The parish church of St. Nicholas is located in the middle of the town in an extension of the Steiner Landstrasse at the foot of the Frauenberg. It was mentioned as early as the 12th century and replaced the first Steiner church on the mountain as the parish church in 1263.
The current building has Gothic roots. The choir was built around 1400, the nave followed in the second half of the 15th century. The west tower is slightly shifted northwards from the alignment of the central nave and was also built in the late Gothic period. The bell tower and the onion dome were added in the Baroque period according to plans by Jakob Prandtauer.
The Baroque high altar from 1688 bears a painting by the Steiner painter Johann Bernhard Grabenberger. It was sold to St. Michael in the Wachau during the extensive Baroque renovation of the church furnishings in 1748-51. The new marble high altar had six sculptures by the sculptor Jakob Christoph Schletterer. The altarpiece by Martin Johann Schmidt (Kremser Schmidt) shows St. Nicholas rescuing shipwrecked people. It has been preserved as a relic of the Baroque church furnishings in the northern aisle, as has the chapel of St. John of Nepomuk, who is also considered the patron saint of sailors.
Most of the Baroque furnishings were removed and partially destroyed during the re-Gothicization in 1901-10. The project was financed by the sale of nine paintings by Kremser Schmidt, including those on the five side altars. His fresco "Resurrection of Christ" in the southern aisle and a few other paintings have been preserved.
A fresco of St. Christopher from 1537 has been preserved on the south side of the nave. A glimpse of the saint was supposed to protect the viewer from a sudden death on this day, which is why the depictions of St. Christopher were oversized and clearly visible on church buildings.
Another Kremser Schmidt can be seen in the church's presbytery: The Baptism of Christ. The former "Old Sacristy" is being opened to the public for the first time with a baroque stucco fresco by Johann Michael Flor. This room has been used as the Chapel of Our Lady since spring 2020.

Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, to whom the church in Stein an der Donau is dedicated, is - along with Saint Martin - probably one of the most popular saints of all. Pretty much every child in German-speaking countries – and far beyond – is probably familiar with his day of remembrance, December 6th.
On the eve of this day, the children used to put their shoes or boots - which were of course cleaned with great care - in front of the door so that Saint Nicholas could fill them with gifts that night. In more agricultural areas, it was also customary for the children to also provide a small donation of food for the donkey, St. Nicholas' riding animal (according to another tradition, this was a gray horse).
