The chancellery, which marks the dividing line between urban area in the south and stately district in the north, was built in 1497 in the reign of Count Philip of Nassau-Idstein as a count's office. The actual gate building, today's "Old Chancellery" was built around 1497 under Philip I (Altherr). The coat of arms with the Nassau lions is in the outer wall. On the back of the old office there are two different entrances. The small entrance on the side stairs was for the prisoners, the ornate staircase was reserved for the officials.
